About 11% of US internet users (or 16 million people) have gone online looking for a date or to meet interesting people, according to a study under the Pew Internet & American Life Project. People of all ages and walks of life are using the Internet to find folks with similar interests and preferences. But why is the Internet so popular for finding companionship? Firstly, it is cheaper than actually going out on a date. Secondly, one has a wide range of people to choose a companion from. Thirdly, it is a more private place (than a bar or club) to discover whether or not you gel well with a person. And finally, there are less “strings attached” and one can end a relationship with greater ease and convenience. However, if you are looking for online companionship, you first need to set rules for yourself.

Be Honest: Write your profile with honesty and be what you are. This is very important because if you do find someone who likes you a lot, it would be for the true you. Moreover, if you eventually get into a serious relationship with your online partner, you would not have to tell him/her that you lied in your profile.

Safety: Although you need to be honest in your profile, do not divulge too much information, like your contact number, address and credit card number. This will protect you from identity theft. Just because you are a sport enthusiast, it doesn’t mean that you will not get along with someone who is not as crazy as you about sports.
